Meet the Mums Behind Spixal

We’re Deanna and Maggie. Sisters, graphic designers, and two mums who know the school morning rush better than we’d like to.

We practically grew up in the family business. Our parents sold school bags and backpacks for more than 35 years, and we took it on, so “back to school” has run through our whole lives. You’d think that would mean we had the lunch-and-school-gear thing sorted. We didn’t. Even with three decades of bags around us, we could never find the one thing we actually wanted: gear that was practical, modern, and that lasted longer than a single school year.

Then it got personal. When Maggie’s daughter started reception, we were living it from the other side. Choosing a school, chasing down the supplier list, the big overwhelm, and then the daily puzzle of packing a lunch she’d actually eat, remembering the hat, and getting everyone out the door on time. We looked around and realised we weren’t the only ones. Every mum we knew was fighting the same messy morning with gear that didn’t fit together, didn’t last, or just didn’t work.

So we did what designers do. We made the thing we couldn’t buy. Backpacks, School Bags, bentos, water bottles and lunch gear that look good, feel good to use, and all work together as one system, so packing the day becomes one job instead of ten.
